HUM 230 Music and Race in America

This course surveys music and race relations in America from the revolution to the present. It examines the musical traditions of the diverse ethnic groups in the nation, including folk music, spirituals, jazz, rock, and hip hop. The course considers how these groups related to each other through music and explores how cross-cultural encounters spurred musical innovation.
