ENG 236 Hitchcock and Gothic Literature
Alfred Hitchcock was a visual and technical innovator who exposed the darkness of everyday life through his films. This course will examine his films alongside authors such as the Brontes, Poe, Wilde, O’Connor, Highsmith, Jackson, and de Maurier to explore the Gothic genre of literature. It is in the Gothic genre where artists can explore themes of family and institutional secrets, terror, taboo, and personal sins as well as larger cultural sins. As Christians, studying the Gothic genre can be especially revealing since it recognizes first-hand the reality of sin and evil. The Gothic also probes the psychology of humans—our deepest fears, longings, and anxieties that sometimes manifest in deeply irrational ways.
