Bible and Theology

DR. KARL KUTZ, DEPARTMENT CHAIRPERSON

An undergraduate bachelor’s degree at Multnomah includes a core requirement in biblical and theological studies. Students learn to understand and articulate the message of Scripture in its literary, historical, and ecclesial contexts. Students gain a foundation for integrating Scripture with whatever field of study they choose to major in and develop a lifelong appreciation for the value of God’s Word in their lives. Students may also choose to complete a full major in Bible and Theology as detailed below. Majors may also complete an advanced concentration in Biblical Languages, Theological Studies, or Theology of Cultural Engagement by adding 12 hours to the major for a total of 51 hours. 

Program Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify major themes of the Old and New Testaments. (BTh1)
  • Students will develop study and interpretive skills in order to understand the meaning of the Scriptures. (BTh2)
  • Students will develop a personal position on key areas of theology, taking into consideration various approaches to theology which have been used throughout the history of the church. (BTh3)
  • Students will develop the ability to integrate and apply the eternal truths of the Bible as authoritative and reliable guidelines for godly living. (BTh4)
  • Students will read the entire Bible. (BTh5)
