Professional Counseling Track

Undergraduate psychology majors who have an interest in progressing toward a career as a professional counselor may seek advance entry into the Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program.  Specifically, these students may submit an abbreviated application for the MAC program as early as their sophomore year in college.  If accepted for early admittance, students will take graduate versions of three undergraduate classes (PSY 304, PSY 373, and PSY 416) and may also take up to three MAC electives as part of their undergraduate, elective units (subject to advisor approval).  All of these classes will meet undergraduate requirements, and allow students to transfer into the MAC program after graduation with advanced standing, possibly graduating as much as a semester early from their graduate work.

Application Procedures:

  • Students must have completed at least 30 units of undergraduate coursework prior to applying.
  • Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Students must complete an abbreviated application for the MAC program, which includes an admissions essay, 2 letters of recommendation, and a personal interview (application fee is waived).
  • Exhibit professional attitudes and behaviors in their coursework and personal interactions on campus.
Upon acceptance into this track:
  • Students must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Continue to exhibit professional attitudes and behaviors.
  • Students must pass all graduate coursework with a “C“ or better.
Students in the Professional Counseling Track will take the courses below as graduate versions of the three courses identified above.

Note: Students in the Professional Counseling Track program are expected to keep a GPA of at least 3.0 and exhibit professionalism in their coursework and personal interactions.  If their GPA falls below 3.0 or their behavior does not seem indicative of a professional counselor, they may lose their admittance and have to reapply for the program.  It should also be noted that this is an agreement between Multnomah University’s undergraduate program and the MAC program.  The graduate level coursework may or may not transfer to as graduate units to other master’s programs.
